Plans, billing and your practice

This article is general information, not tax or legal advice. Tax treatment depends on how you are employed, your state and your practice's setup. Talk to your CPA before relying on it.

Upgrading to Pro

Sign in on the web and open Plan & billing. Pro is $19 a month. Checkout is handled by Stripe. Pro then works everywhere you sign in, including the iOS app.

Cancelling or changing your plan

In Plan & billing, choose Manage subscription. You can update your card, download receipts and invoices, or cancel. You keep Pro until the end of the period you paid for.

Having your practice pay

The simplest way is a Team plan: $15 per seat per month, 3 to 50 seats, and every seat includes Pro. The practice gets one bill. If you already pay for Pro and your practice gives you a seat, your personal plan pauses while you hold it. Set up a practice.

Who can deduct it?

Many practices treat professional software subscriptions as a business expense. Whether you personally can deduct it depends mostly on who pays:

  • Your practice pays. Usually the simplest option.
  • You're a 1099 contractor and pay yourself. Contractors usually report business expenses on their own return. Keep your receipts.
  • You're a W-2 employee and pay yourself. Under current federal law, employees generally cannot deduct unreimbursed work expenses. A few states have their own rules. Ask whether your practice reimburses professional subscriptions, or ask for a seat.

Receipts

Past invoices are available from Manage subscription, which opens the Stripe billing portal. Annual plans and year-end statements are not available yet.

Questions to ask your CPA

  • Should my practice pay for this directly, or reimburse me?
  • Does my practice have an accountable plan for reimbursements?
  • If I'm a contractor, where do I record this on my return?
  • Does my state allow any deduction for work expenses I pay myself?

Mandible doesn't provide tax, legal or accounting advice. Nothing in this article or on your receipts means a purchase is deductible for you.
